Joe Lieberman Dept: Lieberman made the proposal after a congressional report revealed the U.S. manages "acceptable control" of less than one per cent of the border that stretches 6,400 kilometres between the two countries, according to Calgary Herald. And requiring visas of Canadians will do much to hamper trade between Canada and the U.S., not just in terms of commercial traffic, but in the casual cross-border flow of Canadian shoppers and visitors and when Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama meet today to discuss border security, they are wisely leaving off the agenda Senator Joe Lieberman's suggestion that Canadians be required to have visas to visit the United States. If the U.S. is having problems policing the border to its own satisfaction, then it needs to beef up its resources. Forcing Canadians to have visas will do nothing to deter terrorists, who are not coming from Canada anyway. It won't stop drug smugglers, who are a major area of concern on both sides of the border.
