Striking Resemblance: Immigration

Christmas Eve Dept: That's because the characters who live on this crowded and fictional block in Manhattan's Lower East Side are puppets. Don't call them Muppets, for although the creatures bear a striking resemblance to Jim Henson's creations, these are definitely not child-friendly creatures, according to Vancouver Sun. In the midst of an ocean of felt, with performers manipulating the puppets themselves or needing another puppeteer to help, only three of the characters are strictly human. And one of them is Christmas Eve, an Asian immigrant with an accent so thick that she sings It Suck to Be Me and The More You Ruv Someone and few comedies in musical theatre are more outrageous than Avenue Q. Issues of race and sex and money and self-worth are all explored with tongue firmly planted in cheek, and most of those cheeks are made of fuzzy fabric. Songs with such titles as It Sucks to Be Me, If You Were Gay, Everyone's a Little Bit Racist, The Internet is For Porn, I'm Not Wearing Underwear Today and You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want When You're Makin' Love make it clear why the producers of a touring production of Avenue Q playing this week in Vancouver don't want to see anyone in the audience under the age of 16. As reported in the news.
