Mayor Philip Owen: English Immigrant

Vancouver Mayor Dept: He found both, along with many more newspaper headlines. Oliver would become one of British Columbia's top criminal defence lawyers, a judge, and finally the provincial Conflict of Interest Commissioner, according to Vancouver Sun. "He had a fascinating mind," said former Vancouver mayor Philip Owen. "A storyteller and a raconteur. Whenever I went to a banquet when I was mayor, I would work hard to sit next to him or at his table." H.A.D. Oliver arrived in Vancouver on Nov. 12, 1952 with style. Somehow, the English immigrant managed to finagle a front-page story about himself in The Vancouver Province, headlined: "Lawyer seeks criminals and wife." Oliver died Jan. 14 at the age of 89. His funeral Friday at St. James Anglican Church drew a throng of lawyers, judges and politicians who came to pay tribute to one of Vancouver's great characters. As reported in the news.
