Immigration Minister Dept: Several smaller organizations in Toronto and around Ontario are suffering the brunt of next year's $53-million reduction in settlement funding, confirmed last week by Immigration Minister Jason Kenney, according to Calgary Herald. Alberta's federal support for settlement agencies will rise by $4 million to $64 million, from $60 million -- compared to a $44-million or 11-per-cent cut in grants to Canada's largest province and t he continued influx of newcomers to Alberta has helped its immigrant-settlement programs avoid the federal funding cuts that are threatening the existence of agencies elsewhere in Canada. But while grants are slipping for Ontario and British Columbia -- traditional entry ports for newcomers -- Alberta is among the provinces where steadily growing immigration levels are being matched with more funding for 2011.
