Immigration: 100th Birthday

Frosting Dept: After enduring the Soviet gulags and fighting Nazis in Italy and North Africa, the Ukrainian immigrant came to Canada in 1947 with nothing, according to Calgary Herald. "Your nationality or your race doesn't matter here. The government takes care of you. You can go to sleep and not worry about a knock at the door during the night." Licking frosting from his fingers at his 100th birthday party, Konstanty Szyra says he'll never forget that life in this country is sweet. "It was like leaving hell and coming to heaven," Szyra recalls. As reported in the news.
