Congenital Syphilis: Immigration

Chief Medical Officer Of Health Dept: The report was written earlier this year by the office of Dr. Andre Corriveau, chief medical officer of health for Alberta Health and Wellness, and released this week, according to Calgary Herald. Of the nine babies born with congenital syphilis in 2009, four died. At least nine babies have died since 2005 and a springtime report by one of Alberta's top doctors calling for "concerted immediate and long-term actions" to stem a syphilis outbreak that has infected 26 babies since 2000, and "shows no signs of abating," has yet to spark a broad awareness campaign by the provincial government. "No segments of the population are spared from contracting syphilis," the report reads, noting syphilis was confirmed in 267 people in 2009 including babies, teenagers as young as 14, seniors as old as 84, university students and professionals. That compares to two cases in 1999 and 77 cases in 2004. As reported in the news.
