Christmas Celebration: Immigration

Mall Santas Dept: Here's one big difference: You don't see as many children anymore. Like the old downtown department-store Santa Clauses who have drifted out to the suburbs and become mall Santas, children are no longer part of the downtown yuletide landscape, according to Montreal Gazette. It got me thinking about the ongoing controversy in Plateau Mont-Royal over the Mount Royal Ave. merchants' association's annual Christmas celebration, now called Joyeux Decembre! Last Saturday afternoon, Ste. Catherine St. had a different Christmas look and feel to it than the street that I knew back in the 1960s, when I used to go Christmas shopping downtown with my parents. Here's another big difference: You hardly ever see the words "Joyeux Noel" on a sign anymore, let alone "Merry Christmas." Secularism has won out. As reported in the news.
