Split Grade Dept: Before that time all Vancouver children attended the school in their catchment area, which was a good system because it meant that children could play with their classmates after school and go to their birthday parties this was particularly important for immigrant children as it helped them to practise speaking English outside their homes , according to Vancouver Sun. Sadly, many east side schools were depleted of students while the west side schools numbers increased, and this has caused the imbalance in the Vancouver school system. Vancouver has suffered from the vagaries of declining enrolment before, but I think it would be very unwise of the VSB to close down schools and sell off the properties and since I taught kindergarten and elementary grades in east side and west side schools for 25 years for the Vancouver school board, I was very interested in your article, The elementary divide running down Main Street. I am amazed that the VSB did not look back at the changes they enacted in the 1980s that created these problems. From 1988 until 1997 I taught kindergarten and split Grade 2-3 classes at Shaughnessy elementary a west side school , and I was most perturbed about the new ruling as a large number of our students lived in the east side of the city; these families had moved to Vancouver and had been told by relatives or friends that my school had a better standard of learning than their local schools, so they were driven across town on a daily basis to attend school, and other ethnic groups did the same. In kindergarten I had one child living in Port Coquitlam whose parents used an office address in Vancouver and she was driven to and from school . Because she never could play with her classmates after school, or go to their birthday parties, she soon felt left out, was most unhappy and started pinching other children in class, which was a natural reaction. Unfortunately, her parents were only considering their own convenience because they could drop her off on the way to work and get someone else to pick her up, and were not considering her happiness.
