Kosovo War Dept: But the biggest losers of the war were unintended victims, the Roma and their kinfolk, Ashkali and Egyptians who were accused of collaborating with the Serbs and despised as traitors. Most lost their homes, which were destroyed or taken over by others. But now human rights groups have sounded the alarm that the refugees are in danger from forcible return, deprivation and persecution, according to The Star. The group s report, Rights Displaced, on the forced returns of Roma from European countries that have sheltered them for a decade, calls for an immediate halt to deportations, urgent assistance to those who have come back, and implementation of the Kosovo government s plans for integrating the three communities in their former homeland and when the Kosovo war ended in 1999, ethnic Albanians celebrated a NATO victory that drove Serbian forces out of the tiny province, and gave the Albanian majority control over their destiny. They are the poorest, most marginalized community in Kosovo, like everywhere else, said Wanda Troszczynska-van Genderen, Human Rights Watch s researcher in Pristina. Security conditions have improved since the war ended but they have to suffer poverty and deprivation that is unimaginable for most people in the West. As
