Calgary Herald Dept: While other nations are expanding efforts to prevent illegal immigration to their countries, Canada is offering incentives to illegal immigrants and human smugglers. We will escort their ship into the docking area. Once on shore, the passengers will be processed by Citizenship and Immigration, which I assume will be a priority over legal applications already in house. Victoria General Hospital is busy preparing to treat these migrants. Free room and board will be provided while they are being processed. Unfortunately, the only available space to house them was in empty jail space. I assume there weren't hotel suites available. Meanwhile, a federal official indicates we are going to send a message to these human smugglers with terrorist connections that we will not allow our laws to be broken. I am sure the harsh treatment this boatload of illegal refugees is experiencing will be a major deterrent to future attempts. I think the West Coast should begin preparing for flotillas of ships, not only from Sri Lanka, to appear on the horizon, according to Calgary Herald and re: "Hundreds of refugees escorted to B.C. coast," Aug. 12.
