Maritime Journey: Chinese Migrants

Refugee Claims Dept: In both cases, the men and women travelled in squalid boats. Some carried identification; others did not. All intended to file refugee claims in Canada, according to Vancouver Sun. The 599 Chinese men, women and children smuggled into B.C. on four rusty ships were, by and large, economic migrants. For many, the ultimate goal was to slip into a new life in the U.S and when a shipload of Tamils landed on Vancouver Island last week, many British Columbians drew comparisons with a similar maritime journey undertaken by hundreds of Chinese migrants 11 years ago.
