From the ensuing riots to the police investigation to the ongoing coroner's inquest, most Montrealers know by rote what happened on the night of Aug. 9, 2008: the ill-fated game of dice, the botched attempt to arrest, the four shots that rang out in Henri Bourassa Park. But the coroner's inquest is a long way from providing definitive answers as to why a routine patrol by police officers on a warm summer evening went so horribly wrong. And what of the Montreal North neighbourhood where the shooting went down, and that erupted in flames the next day? Reporters Amy Luft, Catherine Solyom and Marian Scott and photographer Vincenzo D'Alto recently spent an evening on the streets and in the park, where the trouble began.
