Immigration: Western Countries

Canadians Dept: There is no easy formula for rooting out this unpredictable kind of plot, but there are things we all can do to minimize the dangers, both physical and social, according to Montreal Gazette. But the accusations ring true, to many people, precisely because Western countries have seen equally unlikely terror suspects before. These are not wild-eyed fanatics newly arrived from some failed state, nor downtrodden victims of savage racism, nor dim-witted dupes. These are ordinary urban Canadians, by all accounts intelligent, at least some of them well-fitted-in to our society, benefiting from its advantages and opportunities like the rest of us and the phenomenon of "homegrown" terrorism is ominously hard to understand. And it has the troubling potential to fuel prejudice against whole communities of immigrants. The three men arrested this week in Ottawa and London, Ont., are, we must always remember, entitled like anyone else to be presumed innocent until proven guilty. As reported in the news.
