Refugee Convention Dept: As an expatriate living in Melbourne, I enjoy reading The Gazette online. Your editorial about the Tamil Tigers should have been entitled "Maybe Australia HAD the answer.", according to Montreal Gazette. In 2007, Labour's Kevin Rudd came into power and closed the Nauru centre. Now, anyone who lands on our shore illegally will spend some time in a detention centre on the mainland. To say that Australia has the answer might have been correct three years ago, but not anymore and re: "Maybe Australia has the answer" Editorial, Aug. 14 . During John Howard's time as prime minister, laws were passed in 2001 to stem the flow of illegal immigrants by sea. In 2002 only one person officially arrived on our shores. A processing centre was opened on Nauru and anyone arriving on a boat as an illegal immigrant was processed offshore. Because Nauru is not a signatory of the Refugee Convention, being processed on Nauru did not automatically guarantee entry into Australia. As
reported in the news.
