Montreal Region Dept: The large-scale backpack distribution organized by the humanitarian-aid wing of the Montreal region's fastest-growing church congregation was another public reminder of the congregation's phenomenal new profile in Quebec religious life, according to Montreal Gazette. Today, more than 3,500 people regularly attend one of the two Sunday morning services inside Eglise Nouvelle Vie's 8,500-square-foot megachurch in a Longueuil industrial park and onward the new evangelical Christian soldiers of the South Shore marched yesterday, succeeding by day's end in outfitting 600 children from poor families with free school backpacks and other school supplies. Eglise Nouvelle Vie, and its affiliated Action Nouvelle Vie humanitarian aid wing, have become influential religious and social players on the South Shore since the congregation was founded in 1993 by 40 people in a room rented from a local school board.
