Brock Township: Dutch Settlers

Marie Vincent Dept: People don t come for afternoon tea the way they used to but I m happy enough here, says Vincent, 74, who s lived there all her life save the three years she went away to get a husband, according to The Star. That s why Sunderland grew and this place died, says Vincent and marie Vincent lives in a ghost town. It s just a shadow of the friendly village she knew as a child, but life in Vroomanton suits her just fine. The once-thriving farming village about 20 minutes south of Lake Simcoe in Brock Township was founded by Colonel James Vrooman, the son of Dutch settlers, in the mid-1800s. It was going to be a stop along the not-yet-built Toronto Nipissing Railway but a farmer wanted too much for his land, the story goes, and the line was put in at Sunderland a few kilometres away instead. As reported in the news.
