Promoting Gender Equality: Rona Ambrose

Calgary Herald Dept: Once unknown in Canada, the scourge of honour killings of women has become an unwelcome reality among certain immigrant families in Canadian society, according to Calgary Herald. And now, according to Rona Ambrose, Minister for the Status of Women, the Harper government wants to work with women's groups, and others involved in promoting gender equality, to fight violence against women, including honour killings and there is no honour in honour killings. One source estimates there have been at least 12 such killings in this country since 2002. Last month, in Brampton, Ont., a Pakistani father, Muhammad Parvez, and his son, Waqas, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder charges in connection with the strangling death of the family's 16-year-old daughter, Aqsa. She had purportedly brought shame to the family by refusing to dress as they wanted. As reported in the news.
