Settlement And Integration Services Organization: Canadian Pediatric Society

Country Doctors Dept: Residents at McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, Ont., set up a volunteer-run pediatric clinic at a welcome centre for immigrants and refugees in the city. The centre, known as the Settlement and Integration Services Organization, also offers English lessons, education and employment services for adults, as well as interpreters, according to CBC. "Almost 95 per cent of our patient population had at least one medical issue that we should be addressing," Umamaheswaran-Maharaj said in an interview Friday from Vancouver, where she had presented the findings at the annual meeting of the Canadian Pediatric Society and child refugees arriving in Canada often have treatable health conditions that can be improved or resolved if screening and care are provided soon after they arrive in the country, doctors say. Dr. Meera Umamaheswaran-Maharaj and Dr. Andrea Hunter studied the demographic and health status of children using the clinic by reviewing 342 charts from September 2004 to September 2009. Of these, 94 per cent were refugees with an average age of eight. As reported in the news.
