Antoine Rayan and Mery Makhoul

Jesse Rayan: From cooking, to ice cream making and even tailoring, they want Calgarians to try their services, according to Metro News. In Syria, Mery Makhoul and husband Antoine Rayan were a teacher and civil engineer respectively, but now, in a new country where they don't speak the language, the couple is hoping their traditional Syrian cuisine can wow Calgarians. Metro met with four Syrian refugees who are looking to make a name for themselves in their new homes by opening their own businesses. In their home kitchen business, Aleppo Kitchen, Makhoul cooks traditional Aleppo dishes while Rayan helps in the kitchen and delivers the food. My mom is a very good cook, especially traditional Aleppo food, said Jesse. Speaking through their daughter Jesse Rayan, who translated, the couple said they want only to be able to support themselves—and introduce others to their delicious cuisine.
