Sandra Jean Dept: This is a beautiful Christmas present, the Mississauga grandmother said with relief, of the news that she will finally get her Canadian citizenship after living six decades in Canada. I never did have status here. This means so much to me, according to The Star. Only last year, when she applied for Old Age Security payments and was asked for her immigration papers, did she discover she had never actually been registered as a landed immigrant and santa has come early for Sandra Jean Burke. Burke, 66, has lived, worked, paid taxes, raised three boys and even voted in Canadian elections since her grandparents rescued the half-Canadian girl from a U.S. orphanage at age 6 and brought her here in 1951.
